Bonus Marathi Movie
What’s Bonus About:
Aditya Deodhar (Gashmeer Mahajani) is the millennial grandson of a successful Game-of-Thrones-watching cool industrialist (Dr. Mohan Agashe) and they live in Nashik. While the Sr. Deodhar is all for giving increments and bonuses to his staff every year, Aditya has some radical ideas. He wants to scrap the bonus and save the company some money but Grandpa is against this. “It’s not easy to live on just an average person’s salary”, he says. To resolve this conflict, Grandpa challenges Aditya to try and survive a month in Mumbai on the average salary their workers get. Aditya finds a house in a koli neighborhood, where he has to face the struggles of visiting a washroom that’s outside the house, water issues, allergies, and even illness. Despite his hesitance, the area folks welcome him and he finds a friend in Minal (Pooja Sawant). After his apartment floods and he loses his job as a storekeeper in a shoe shop, Aditya is ready to concede and return home. However, after a tête-à -tête with Minal, he decides to change his outlook and give this challenge another try.
What Works:
Bonus’ script is interesting and the story goes through a natural flow. Be it the depiction of Aditya not realizing what he is getting into or his transformation into being a part of his locality through various commonplace incidents, the film keeps it real. There’s no melodrama and everyone delivers natural performances with conviction. The romantic plotline is breezy and sweet and doesn’t interfere with the story; it only cements it. Gashmeer Mahajani embodies the privileged Aditya Deodhar well and there’s grace in his losing the challenge. He makes believable and genuine connections with the other residents, which are the film’s endearing moments. Bonus ends on a pragmatic note and doesn’t feel stretched at any point. Saurabh Bhave has done a good job of establishing Aditya as a proxy-ish to the audience and taking us through the struggles of people who live differently.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The film feels formulaic in places and the journey feels slightly incomplete. Dr. Mohan Agashe doesn’t get much screen space and that’s always saddening. Apart from Aditya, the other characters seem slightly underdeveloped and trope-y. The lead pair’s chemistry is not much to talk about.
Why You Should Watch:
Bonus appreciates the spirit and the struggles of people with limited means. It makes the audience reevaluate their own lives, is thought-provoking, and makes for a decent one-time watch.
